The Head of the Herd
The Head of the Herd – 12/08/2020
The question I get asked more often than not is why did you call your business ‘The HR Elephant’? I thought it was fitting to answer that on World Elephant Day 2020.
People say, is it because sometimes HR is seen as the elephant in the room or HR is a big beast for any business to tackle? Yes, it could absolutely be open to any of these interpretations but the answer for me is very simple. I love elephants. I am fascinated by them. They are amazing creatures and so much of the study of traits in elephants, I believe, resonates with the people trying to manage and look after other people.
They are strong, powerful creatures who are respected by other animal groupings. They are believed to be one of the most intelligent species in the world. In fact, Elephants manifest a wide variety of behaviours. They are believed to display characteristics associated with compassion, cooperation, self-awareness, memory, communication and learning amongst others. These for me are also key characteristics that should be displayed by people managers and those entrusted to look after the welfare of others.
The HR Elephant is built on the concept of that intelligent and in tune Elephant leading its herd.
Did you know the head of the herd is called the ‘Matriarch’ and that females are the boss?
Interestingly again these stats are reflected in the UK in the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) which has an overwhelmingly female membership base (79%) and approximately 80% of those taking postgraduate HRM qualifications are female.
This is not necessarily a positive thing as we believe despite the matriarchal connotations of the elephant the field of HR should feel as open to males as it does to females.
So there you have it, we love our connection to this intelligent animal and with the characteristics we hope to find in people managers.
We love growing and nurturing our ‘herd’ to be the best in their field. We are proud to working right across the island of Ireland to help the head of the herd in our client businesses- male or female, with a HR title or not, effectively lead and guide their herd to success.
Happy World Elephant Day.
